Hi Jon, welcome to Am3 and thank you for your comment on my blog :)
To answer your question, I don't have a macro lens for my Nikon, I use the macro setting and try to get in as close as I can, and if need be I crop the image to get closer. On my Panasonic Lumix I have some close up filters which work brilliantly, but the macro setting work well on that camera too.
I saw that you are going to college to learn photography, me too, starting in Sept. I've been into photography for years, but this will be my first course, in the hope I can eventually learn the technical side. Untill then, my eyes are my guide for taking photo's. Try to look beyond the obvious shot, there is usually something that you may have missed when you first looked.

This site is an inspiration, with lots and lots of very talented photographers, posting some awesome shots, so take some time to look around, I'm sure you'll find plenty to get your creativity going.
This is a lovely shot, of this pretty garden and house. The shot's you have posted so far are very impressive too :)
